The Canal Saint-Martin in Paris is considered as one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful waterways in Paris. The centuries-old canal isn’t just considered as the most beautiful but it also became the dirtiest, to the point that it had to be cleaned out.
The city authorities have recently drained the canal for the first time since 2001, removing more than 40 tons of debris and trash in the process.
But then, they did not just discover cans clogging the waterways, but also tons of artifacts that were truly unbelievable!
It was in 1802 when the construction of this popular canal was started. It was originally designed to bring fresh water to the city’s rapidly growing population and it also provided an avenue for commerce.
However, as time flies, the canal had become a watery garbage dump, forcing the authorities to strain it and clean everything.
There were tons of wine bottles and beer cans discovered. But that’s not all, they were a lot more! There were a couple of bicycles that appeared after it was drained, there was even a motorcycle!
The authorities believe that some of this huge things in the waterways were thrown on purpose.
While others were disgusted by what they discovered, there were some who were fascinated especially with the fact that some artifacts are already too old.
In the process of cleaning, they tried saving the aquatic resources. In a few days, they were able to remove four tons of fish to a safe location.
There were even older things like boom boxes, old cameras and even a few artifacts from the first World War including the coins, an unexploded shell, and even a car!
